The 17th EDITION ELECTRICAL REGULATIONS

In laymens terms pretty much everything that was required before is still required.

The major new requirement for existing installations is the protection required by RCD.

The regulation requires that if you cannot guarantee that all cables are a minimum of 2" or 50mm below the surface they are behind or are not mechanically protected to the required degree (realistically in steel pipe) you will need RCD protection.

There are several ways this can be provided it just depends upon you personal installation and preferences.

However there can be exceptions to the regulations and certain circuits, fire safety systems, computer circuits for example can be exempt if correctly identified.
